Why Saying Their Name Matters

For many years before McKayla’s battle ended, I was deep in the trenches beside my granddaughter, helping her fight while quietly fighting to hold on to my own strength and sanity.

Addiction affected every part of our lives. My days were filled with worry, fear, hope, heartbreak, and the constant belief that somehow we would find our way through. Yet through all those years, something else became painfully clear: the silence surrounding addiction can be almost as isolating as the battle itself.

Many close family members and friends stopped mentioning McKayla’s name. She disappeared from conversations and messages. Very few people asked how she was doing, or how I was doing. Some did, and I will always remember them for it. But most said nothing.

I know now that people may have been afraid of saying the wrong thing. Perhaps they did not know what to ask or how to help. But silence did not protect me from the pain. It left me carrying it alone.

And now that McKayla is gone, that silence could become deafening.

Millions of families understand this kind of loneliness. They love someone living with addiction, homelessness, mental illness, or another battle the world finds difficult to discuss. They carry fear, grief, and hope quietly because stigma has taught them that these stories should remain hidden.

But their loved ones are not their struggles. Their lives are more than their hardest chapters, and their names should never become words people are afraid to say.

McKayla’s name is more than a word. It holds her laughter, her strength, her stubbornness, her beauty, and every memory we created together.

When I say her name, I am not only remembering how her life ended. I am remembering how deeply she lived, how fiercely she fought, and how completely she was loved.

That is why SAY THEIR NAME was created.

Because memories live in stories. Because love deserves a voice. Because no family should have to grieve—or hope—in silence.

No blame. No shame. Say their name.

Personalized remembrance pieces give us a way to carry their name into the world. A name on a shirt, hat, mug, or keepsake can invite a question, begin a conversation, and create an opportunity to share the person behind the name.

Every time their story is told, another part of them is remembered. Their name remains visible, their story remains alive, and the silence becomes a little less deafening.
